The shooting in the Auburn Mall parking lot happened right before the Friday night dinner rush.
A lot of folks saw what happened and ran over to help.
Opelika resident Katie Dawson drove up on the shooting aftermath. Her 19-month-old in the car with her. Still, she sprang into action to give medical help to one of the men shot.
“I drove right through here. A man was on his cell phone and I saw some ladies over here and then I saw a man laying on the ground,” said Dawson.
She said she didn’t think, she just acted.
“I saw him holding his side and the ladies told me he’d been shot. That’s when I got out of my car and grabbed a diaper and my daughter’s shirt and put the diaper under his leg and gave him the shirt to apply pressure and just waited for help,” said Dawson.
Many people stopped to help, but Dawson said it didn’t occur to her that they could still be in danger.
“I couldn’t believe this was happening. I didn’t know if there was a shooter on the loose, I didn’t know the situation, all I knew was he was shot and my 19-month-old was sitting in the back seat of the car watching a Disney movie and had no idea what was going on,” said Dawson.
First responders came within minutes, but Dawson said it felt like hours had gone by.
“When I got over there, it just felt like I was on the ground forever with him,” said Dawson.
She said it was a scary situation, but she knew the man needed help and that’s how everyone felt in that moment.
“I’ve dealt with scrapes and gashes from my kids, but that’s the extent of blood I’ve ever dealt with,” said Dawson.
A lot of helping hands that put themselves in harms way to do what they needed to do.
“We kept talking to him to make sure he was still awake, asking him what his name was. One lady called his mom had him talk to her. We didn’t know what the situation was, we didn’t know what he had done, what the other person had done, it wasn’t our place to judge the situation. We just wanted to help him anyway we could,” said Dawson.
