Some students just weren’t down with the School District’s alternative plan to engage legislators with preapproved questions so they stuck with the original idea regardless of the ramifications.
To cheers from a retired local educator, two Seniors at the top ranked Columbus High School boldly walked out as part of a national protest.
“I believe that in walking out and protesting I have a choice and that’s something that the 17 victims of the Parkland shooting did not have.” Sakeli Givens
Reporter- You’re fired up about this
“Oh I’m very fired up about it. I just wish that more students and more parent sand more city officials would have been here to support these students. This is the biggest issue in our country and nothing else matters more to me than that students are safe.” Lois Johnston
Another Senior said she wanted to do more than just sound off to state lawmakers.
“If I had actually enjoyed the speak up sit in and thought that it was going to do something then I probably wouldn’t have walked out but it didn’t meet my needs and it didn’t satisfy my right to protest I felt.” Sarah Reed Brooks
The threat of discipline they said was no match for their message.
“My parents have always told me to be the change and although there’s gonna be consequences when I go back inside I know that I was able at least some how to contribute to give honor to those 17 victims.” Sakeli Givens
The students also expressed concern to First News citing the situation in Parkland where the shooter simply waltzed in undetected and the doors to their own school they say are rarely locked.
