Some students just weren’t down with the School District’s alternative plan to engage legislators with preapproved questions so they stuck with the original idea regardless of the ramifications.

To cheers from a retired local educator, two Seniors at the top ranked Columbus High School boldly walked out as part of a national protest.

“I believe that in walking out and protesting I have a choice and that’s something that the 17 victims of the Parkland shooting did not have.”  Sakeli Givens

Reporter- You’re fired up about this

“Oh I’m very fired up about it. I just wish that more students and more parent sand more city officials would have been here to support these students. This is the biggest issue in our country and nothing else matters more to me than that students are safe.” Lois Johnston

Another Senior said she wanted to do more than just sound off to state lawmakers.

“If I had actually enjoyed the speak up sit in and thought that it was going to do something then I probably wouldn’t have walked out but it didn’t meet my needs and it didn’t satisfy my right to protest I felt.” Sarah Reed Brooks

The threat of discipline they said was no match for their message.

“My parents have always told me to be the change and although there’s gonna be consequences when I go back inside I know that I was able at least some how to contribute to give honor to those 17 victims.” Sakeli Givens

The students also expressed concern to First News citing the situation in Parkland where the shooter simply waltzed in undetected and the doors to their own school they say are rarely locked.

The Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles has denied clemency for death row inmate Carlton Gary.

Attorneys for Gary, known as the Columbus “Stocking Strangler”, had asked the board to commute his death sentence.

The lawyers said new evidence proves Gary did not commit the crimes of which he was convicted.

Gary was convicted in 1986 for the rapes and murders of three elderly women.

The 67 year old inmate is scheduled to be put to death Thursday night at the state prison in Jackson, Georgia.

WLTZ-TV News Reporter Robbie Watson has been selected by the state to witness the execution.

Robbie will report Thursday night on WLTZ First News after the sentence has been carried out.

Gary has appeals pending before the Georgia State Supreme Court and the U.S. Supreme Court.

A written statement from the board about the denial of clemency reads as follows:
Following a meeting to consider clemency for condemned inmate Carlton Michael Gary, and after thoroughly considering all of the facts and circumstances of the case, the State Board of Pardons and Paroles has denied clemency in the case.

The Superior Court of Muscogee County has ordered the execution of Gary for the 1977 Columbus murders of Florence Scheible, Martha Thurmond and Kathleen Woodruff. The Georgia Department of Corrections has scheduled the execution to take place by lethal injection on Thursday, March 15, 2018, at 7 p.m. at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison in Jackson.

In August of 1986, Gary was convicted in Muscogee County of three counts of malice murder, three counts of rape and three counts of burglary and sentenced to death. The Georgia Supreme Court denied Gary’s appeal on December 1, 2017, and his motion for reconsideration was denied on January 16, 2018. The United States Supreme Court has denied all previous appeals in the case.

Today’s meeting was held to receive information for or against clemency. The board members have been reviewing the parole case file on Gary for the past several weeks and, prior to today’s meeting; the Board had reviewed the application requesting clemency for Gary.

The Board maintains a comprehensive file on each death row inmate. The file contains the history of the life of the condemned inmate, including the inmate’s criminal history and the circumstances of the crimes committed resulting in the death sentence.

In Georgia, the Parole Board has the sole constitutional authority to grant clemency in a death penalty case.
