(CNN) – The opioid addiction epidemic sweeping the nation shows no signs of abating.

In fact; according to the Centers for Disease Control it’s getting worse.

The CDC says emergency room visits for suspected opioid overdoses jumped by roughly 30 percent between June 2016 and September 2017.

The largest surge was in the Midwest, which saw an increase of 70%, with a 109% increase in Wisconsin alone.

The CDC says the problem isn’t the number of people addicted to opioids, which has remained consistent, but the lethality of opioids available.

That means drugs like heroin, prescription pain killers, and fentanyl.

ONE Harris County is partnering with The Civil Rights and Restorative Justice Project at Northeastern University School of Law and the family of Henry “Peg” Gilbert to organize a commemoration to honor the life and legacy of Gilbert.

He was married with four daughters.

On May 10th, descendants of the Gilbert family will be joined by members of the community to recognize this injustice.

A civil rights marker and a new gravestone will be unveiled.

(CNN) – Thursday Volkswagen announced a move to combat climate change not in how its cars use fuel, but how the company makes its cars.

Europe’s biggest automaker said it will stop using coal to power its assembly plant in Wolfsburg, Germany.

The company will spend $494 million to modernize two power stations there.

The plan is for the both stations to use natural gas instead of coal by 2022.

Volkswagen is also boosting production of electric cars.

The environmentally friendly moves come as the company deals with fallout from its global diesel scandal.

Volkswagen admitted in 2015 it rigged engines to cheat on emissions tests.
